Weight Loss & Dehydration
Cancer cachexia and treatment side effects can cause rapid unintended weight loss and chronic dehydration. This involves muscle wasting driven by inflammatory cytokines — not just reduced calorie intake. Even with adequate eating, the inflammatory process consumes muscle. Hydration is critical for kidney protection, drug clearance, and energy.

When to Seek Medical Help Immediately
- •More than 5% body weight lost in one month
- •Unable to eat or drink for more than 24 hours
- •Signs of severe dehydration: dark urine, sunken eyes, rapid pulse, confusion
- •Sudden or worsening muscle weakness
2 Natural Remedies
Oral Rehydration with Electrolytes
Best for: Dehydration from vomiting, diarrhoea, or poor intake
Plain water is less efficient at rehydration than solutions containing sodium, potassium, and glucose together — electrolytes drive water into cells. Cancer patients losing fluids through vomiting, diarrhoea, or sweating need electrolyte replacement to avoid electrolyte imbalances (particularly low sodium and potassium) which affect heart and nerve function.
🧪 How to Prepare
Home ORS: mix 1 litre clean water + 6 teaspoons sugar + 1/2 teaspoon salt + squeeze of lemon (adds potassium). Coconut water is also a good natural electrolyte source (contains potassium, magnesium). Avoid sugary sports drinks with artificial colours. Sip 100–200 ml every 15–20 minutes rather than large amounts at once.
⏰ When to Take
Throughout the day. Increase intake after vomiting or diarrhoea episodes. Target 8–10 cups of fluid daily.
High-Calorie Protein Smoothies
Best for: Cancer cachexia, difficulty eating solid food, post-surgical recovery
Liquid calories are easier to consume when appetite is poor or swallowing is difficult. Prioritising protein is critical because cancer cachexia preferentially wastes muscle protein. Whey protein has the highest leucine content of any protein source — leucine directly stimulates muscle protein synthesis and partially counteracts the inflammatory muscle-wasting process.
🧪 How to Prepare
Blend: 1 scoop whey protein (or plant-based pea protein), 1 banana, 2 tablespoons nut butter, 1 cup full-fat milk or oat milk, 1 tablespoon coconut oil. Optional: add avocado for healthy fat calories, dates for carbohydrate energy. Target 400–600 kcal and 25–30g protein per smoothie.
⏰ When to Take
Between meals (in addition to meals, not instead of). Morning and afternoon work well.
