Madagascar Periwinkle
Catharanthus roseus
Madagascar Periwinkle is the source of two of the world's most important chemotherapy drugs — vincristine and vinblastine (vinca alkaloids). Vincristine is a cornerstone of paediatric ALL leukaemia treatment; vinblastine treats Hodgkin's lymphoma and testicular cancer. Both drugs work by binding tubulin, collapsing the mitotic spindle and halting cell division. This plant is one of the greatest examples of traditional plant medicine directly saving modern lives. Newer semi-synthetic derivatives (vinorelbine, vindesine) continue to be developed from the same plant.
Medicinal Properties
Cancer Types Studied
Recommended Dosage
Pharmaceutical vincristine/vinblastine administered IV by oncologist only. Whole plant preparations are NOT recommended — alkaloid content is too variable and toxic without clinical dosing.
Preparations
Pharmaceutical Only (Vincristine / Vinblastine)
Vinca alkaloids are administered intravenously by oncologists as part of chemotherapy regimens (CHOP, ABVD, VAD). Do NOT attempt to self-prepare — the raw plant contains unquantifiable toxic alkaloid levels.
Historical Leaf Tea (Traditional)
In Madagascar and India, a weak leaf decoction was used for diabetes and general health. NOT used as a cancer preparation due to narrow therapeutic index of alkaloids.

Cautions & Interactions
- Whole plant preparations are dangerous — vinca alkaloid overdose causes severe peripheral neuropathy and neurotoxicity
- Pharmaceutical vinca alkaloids are administered only under oncology supervision
- The raw plant should never be self-administered as a cancer treatment
- Peripheral neuropathy is the main dose-limiting side effect of pharmaceutical vincristine
