Birch Bark / Silver Birch

Betula pendula / Betula pubescens

Anti-tumourmoderate evidence

Birch bark is one of Europe's most important anti-cancer discoveries of recent decades. Betulinic acid — isolated from the white bark of Betula pendula — induces apoptosis specifically in melanoma, glioblastoma, neuroblastoma, and leukaemia cells with remarkable selectivity for cancerous over normal tissue. It acts through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, bypassing the p53 mutations that make many cancers resistant to conventional chemotherapy. Betulin (the precursor compound) is converted to betulinic acid in the body and is present in high concentrations in the outer white bark. Russian and Nordic folk healers have used birch bark preparations for centuries for skin conditions and tumours. Multiple research institutions including the NCI have identified betulinic acid as a lead anti-cancer compound.

Standardised Betulinic Acid Capsules

250–500 mg standardised birch bark extract (standardised to betulinic acid content) daily. Ensure the product specifies betulinic acid — not just 'birch extract' which may be leaf, not bark.

Birch Bark Tea (Chaga Style)

Simmer 10–15 g dried inner white birch bark in 1 litre water for 30–40 minutes. Drink 2 cups daily. Traditional Russian preparation used for skin and tumour conditions.

Cautions & Interactions

  • Birch pollen allergy patients may react to bark preparations — start low
  • Ensure bark preparation, not leaf — different phytochemical profile
  • May interact with immunosuppressants
  • Limited long-term human safety data at high doses — use cyclically (6 weeks on, 2 weeks off)
