Past Life Regression (PLR)
Spiritual & Consciousness
Past Life Regression (PLR) is a therapeutic technique that uses deep hypnosis or guided relaxation to help individuals access memories or experiences that are believed to originate from past lives. In the context of cancer care, PLR is used to help patients explore existential fears, release deep-seated emotional blocks, find personal meaning in their illness, and approach death with reduced fear. Pioneered in the West by Dr Brian Weiss (Many Lives, Many Masters), PLR is now offered by trained therapists and integrative medicine practitioners worldwide. Whether understood through a spiritual lens (as actual past-life memories) or a psychological lens (as the unconscious mind using symbolic narrative for healing), many participants report profound relief from existential anxiety, a stronger sense of purpose, and reduced fear of death after PLR sessions.
Conditions Addressed
How It Works
From a spiritual perspective, PLR is understood as accessing the soul's memories across multiple lifetimes, releasing karmic patterns, and resolving unfinished emotional business that may be manifesting as illness or distress in the current life. From a psychological perspective, the deep hypnotic or theta-wave trance state allows the unconscious mind to surface symbolic narratives that facilitate emotional processing, acceptance, and meaning-making — similar to how dreamwork or depth psychotherapy operates. The therapeutic mechanism may overlap with somatic trauma release and narrative therapy: the patient becomes the author of their own story, which can profoundly shift their relationship to suffering and mortality.
What a Session Looks Like
Typically 1.5—3 hours per session with a certified PLR therapist (trained in Brian Weiss, Michael Newton, or similar lineages). The client is guided into a deep relaxation or light hypnotic state, then verbally guided through scenes or experiences that arise. The therapist facilitates exploration and emotional release rather than directing content. Sessions can be in-person or online. Integration sessions between PLR sessions are recommended. Not suitable for individuals with active psychosis or severe dissociative disorders.
Cautions & Considerations
- Not a substitute for conventional cancer treatment or evidence-based psychotherapy
- Contraindicated in active psychosis, severe dissociative identity disorder, or borderline personality disorder without specialist supervision
- Experiences can be emotionally intense — ensure therapist is trained in trauma-informed approaches
- Outcomes are experiential and subjective — benefit should not be evaluated solely through a biomedical lens
- Choose a certified practitioner (trained through recognised lineages such as Brian Weiss Institute or Michael Newton Institute)
- Inform your oncology and mental health team that you are exploring PLR as part of your integrative care
