MDMA-Assisted Therapy

Psychedelic-Assisted

moderate evidenceResearch / Trials

MDMA-assisted therapy is showing transformative results for PTSD including PTSD resulting from a cancer diagnosis, traumatic treatment experiences, or medical trauma. Phase 3 clinical trials by MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) showed 67% of PTSD patients no longer met diagnostic criteria after 3 MDMA sessions. The mechanism is distinct from psilocybin MDMA reduces fear response while maintaining memory access, allowing traumatic memories to be processed without being overwhelmed.

How It Works

Releases large amounts of serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin ? reduces amygdala fear response while maintaining prefrontal cortex access ? creates a unique window where traumatic memories can be revisited without triggering defensive shutdown. This 'fear extinction without memory suppression' allows deep trauma processing. Oxytocin release strengthens therapeutic alliance and promotes self-compassion.

What a Session Looks Like

Typically 3 extended sessions (68 hours each) 46 weeks apart, with the same two trained therapists present throughout. Each session is preceded by 3 preparation sessions and followed by 3 integration sessions. Total programme: 46 months. Currently only available within approved clinical trials.

Cautions & Considerations

  • Currently only legal within authorised clinical trials
  • Cardiovascular stress contraindicated in hypertension, heart disease, arrhythmia
  • Serotonin syndrome risk with SSRIs, MAOIs, linezolid must discontinue before therapy
  • Hyperthermia risk hydration and temperature monitoring essential
  • Post-session fatigue and low mood (serotonin depletion) for several days integration support critical
  • Contraindicated in bipolar disorder type I, uncontrolled hypertension, liver disease
  • Avoid all street MDMA purity and dose control is essential for safety
