Colloidal Silver
Also known as: Nano Silver, Silver Hydrosol, Ionic Silver, Silver Colloid
Colloidal silver consists of tiny silver particles (1–100 nanometres) suspended in liquid. Before antibiotics, silver compounds were used medicinally — silver nitrate for wound infections, silver sutures. Modern colloidal silver products are sold online and at health food stores, ranging from dilute preparations (5–20 ppm) to concentrated versions. Some proponents make it themselves with home electrolysis kits.
What Proponents Claim
Advocates claim colloidal silver is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that also kills cancer cells by disrupting cellular respiration and DNA replication in malignant cells. They claim it selectively targets cancerous tissue while sparing healthy cells, detoxifies the body, boosts immune function, and that pharmaceutical companies suppress its use because it cannot be patented.
What the Science Actually Shows
Verdict: Insufficient Evidence
Silver does have genuine and well-documented antimicrobial properties — this is not disputed. Silver nanoparticles are used in hospital wound dressings, catheters, and surgical instruments to prevent bacterial biofilm formation. Some in vitro (cell culture) studies have shown silver nanoparticles can be cytotoxic to cancer cell lines — but this is true of many toxic substances. The critical problems are: (1) silver nanoparticles are cytotoxic to normal cells too, not selectively to cancer cells; (2) no animal models demonstrate therapeutic anti-cancer efficacy; (3) there are no clinical trials in cancer patients; (4) oral colloidal silver is not absorbed into the bloodstream in nanoparticle form — it ionises in the acidic stomach environment. There is no credible mechanistic or clinical basis for the claim that oral colloidal silver treats cancer.
Regulatory Stance
The FDA issued a final ruling in 1999 stating that colloidal silver is not generally recognised as safe or effective for treating any disease or condition. The FDA prohibits marketing colloidal silver as a treatment for any disease, including cancer. The FTC has repeatedly taken action against companies making cancer treatment claims for colloidal silver. In Australia, the TGA has also ruled against therapeutic claims. Silver compounds used medically in wound care (silver sulfadiazine) are FDA-approved but these are topical antibiotics — not oral cancer treatments.
Known Risks
- Argyria: permanent blue-grey discolouration of skin, eyes, and mucous membranes from silver accumulation — irreversible and cosmetically disfiguring
- Nephrotoxicity: silver accumulates in kidneys and can cause renal damage with high or prolonged consumption
- Antibiotic interference: silver ions bind to and inactivate antibiotics — reduces the efficacy of tetracyclines, quinolones, and other antibiotics
- Drug interactions: reduces absorption of penicillamine, thyroxine, and certain antifungal medications
- Neurological effects: argyria cases report associated neuropathy and neurological symptoms
- Silver accumulation in liver, spleen, and adrenal glands documented in long-term users
- Home-made colloidal silver varies wildly in concentration and particle size — no quality control
